I have now been working at EndoCare Harley Street for almost a year and it has been a great learning experience so far. I first became a dental nurse 13 years ago and have enjoyed the job thoroughly, working in different fields of dentistry.
My position is slightly different here, mostly working on the reception and the admin side of the job. It is equally as interesting, and a great way to interact with the patients and the referring dentists.
When not working I enjoy spending time with family and friends and often travel up north at weekends.

In the final weekend of June my life “changed” forever – I got married…

My fiancé Jasmin and I exchanged vows in Copenhagen on a beautiful midsummer’s day. At 10 o’clock we had the formal ceremony in the city hall, followed by a private ceremony and dinner in the Norwegian ambassador’s residence that afternoon. The party lasted until the early hours the following morning. Jasmin and I had a great time and I think the guests did too, but on Monday morning it was back to work again for me – the honeymoon is planned for October, when it’s rainy and dark in London!

Lots of people keep asking me how my life has changed now I am married (even though it was only two weeks ago). Always truthful, my reply is this: “No, my life has not changed, expect for that now I have to remember to put back on the ring when I finish treating patients”.

After finishing my A-Level in Human Biology one year ago I was lucky enough to land a job as a nurse at the Harley Street branch of EndoCare and on my very first day I knew it was the job for me. Even though it has already been one year since I started work at EndoCare, it still feels like yesterday that I joined the team. Time has flown by!

On a normal day I work in a team with the dentists and support staff, helping during procedures, taking payment, booking appointments and cleaning the surgeries. Last week I worked in the Richmond practice and Friday was a particularly busy day. We had to treat quite a few emergency patients who were in a lot of pain. We had dentists calling us asking if we could see their patients and we worked through our lunch break to treat them.

We treat a lot of nervous patients at EndoCare. A couple of weeks ago we saw an elderly gentleman who was so anxious during his first treatment that I had to hold his hand. When the patient came in for his second appointment I was originally due to work in another branch. However I was advised that this particular patient had a bit of a soft spot for me and was asked to change my shift to work during his treatment. When the man saw me he gave me a big hug – it’s always good to see a happy customer!

I have currently been working with the EndoCare team for six months now, during which time I have gained a lot of experience in the field of business administration because of the resources and training that EndoCare has kindly gave me. This experience has been very enjoyable for me and I have had a great tutor in Lois Winter to help guide, nurture and refine my skills.

My journey started when I was at college in Tower Hamlets doing an NVQ level 2 business administration course. To complete this course a practical work based section had to completed, Michael was kind enough to give me this fantastic opportunity within his prestigious organisation and employed me on full time on a basis to allow me to further my education. I will commence NVQ level 3 at Westminster College in August this year.

My main role at EndoCare is as part of the support team at head office; we handle everything on the non-clinical side in the development of the business. My initial responsibility was to compile an operations and maintenance manual for our newly established Richmond branch which gave me a huge insight into the day-to-day requirements of an endodontics practice. The Head Office is just off Marylebone High Street and I love the versatility of the area.

My responsibilities also include locating venues for our team building exercises. On the way to view a venue, I met the assistant manager of the England soccer aid team James Corden! As I am a very keen follower of football this was a real bonus! Later after our meeting we decided to go for a drink at the 1888 Inn, where I also met Amy Winehouse. Only yesterday I bumped into Matt Lucas and David Walliams. Working here certainly has its perks!

Recently Michael sent me on a Sage accounts course, so this last week has been all about putting my training into practice. I have been updating our accounts, inputting cheques, invoices and reconciling the accounts; all a new and challenging skills for me.

As you may have gathered, meeting James was a real treat for me . I am family orientated and I love spending time with my friends going out to gigs and festivals. I’m a big movie buff and enjoy a wide variety sports, including tennis, rugby, cricket, golf, badminton and basketball. I am a football fanatic also I believe that football will be coming back this year to its homeland of ENGLAND!

It’s been four months now since I started working for the Richmond Branch of Endocare, and I am pleased to say that I feel happy and confident in my new role. We are building up a really great team here in Richmond, one that I think we should be proud of.

Last week was a bit of a whirlwind, many new patients joined us, some of whom were very relaxed and others that were obviously anxious. However, thanks to our friendly, professional team, we were able to help and treat them all.

Even though we were incredibly busy, we still managed to squeeze in a visit to one of our referral practices to give a lecture to their lovely team on how to control the pain in dental emergencies. After the lecture was over we all enjoyed lunch together, which was a really pleasant way to end our visit. We are very much looking forward to seeing many more of our referral practices.

The day of the London marathon began with heavy rain but later on we were treated to beautiful sunshine. The atmosphere was fantastic with bands playing and children lining the streets offering the runners jelly babies. All in all, a great day.

I was really psyched up for the race but at first I found it difficult to run because the pace was slow and too many people-started off walking.

I ran 30km well but then I started to get pain in my right hip, which eventually seized up completely. There was no way I wasn’t going to finish the race so I walked and limped the last 12km. I crossed the finish line with a disappointing time of 4:44 but I’ll definitely do the whole thing again.

But for now its going to be trips to the physio and cortisone shots for me. The day itself, however, was fantastic – crowds were cheering, there were bodies on the ground having treatment – but at least I finished. 6,000 runners didn’t and 100 ended up in hospital.
On to my next challenge!

This was much more fun than giving CPD lectures and really helped us to start building relationships with referrers, who took the opportunity to look around the practice and ask lots of questions.
