Post-Treatment Care
Post-Treatment analgesia
Inevitably, as after any invasive treatment, there will be bruising, which can range from mild to more severe, depending on how infected/inflamed the tooth was pre-treatment. We do not generally advocate the use of opiate analgesics but recommend alternating different types of painkillers to get enhanced benefit of both.
The regime we would normally advise is to take Ibuprofen 400mg, alternating it every 3 hours with Paracetamol 500mg.
Antibiotics are only indicated if there are real signs of infection such as swelling and fever.
Post-Surgery
After surgery there will inevitably be swelling and bleeding. Instructions for care are more precise in this instance.
The Patient Should:
- Take it easy for the rest of the day.
- Avoid eating and drinking for at least two hours following treatment.
- Avoid hot fluids, alcohol, smoking or eating hard or chewy foods.
Use Cold Packs. When you get home apply an ice pack (such as a pack of frozen peas) on the cheek over the treated area. After 20 minutes, place the pack back in freezer for 20 minutes then reapply to the face. Continuing this regime for two hours will help reduce swelling considerably.
Post-Treatment Review
As part of the follow-up to any procedure, we encourage patients to contact us if they are in anyway concerned about treatment.
We normally take follow-up radiographs around six months later. If healing has been in any way delayed, we will review the patient annually until we are happy and there are good signs of bone regeneration.
