Can root canal treatment really be pain-free?

There is a common misconception that root canal treatment is always painful, but is this really the case today?
Many people are – understandably – concerned about whether root canal treatment (endodontics) will hurt. However, modern techniques, materials, and technologies can actually provide a painless experience for many patients.
How badly does a root canal hurt?
We are often asked ‘how much will a root canal hurt on a scale of 1-10’? This is very difficult to answer because everyone’s experience will be different, and how everyone feels pain will be different. However, we would estimate that most root canal pain would be scored at around 0-2 out of 10 following great anaesthesia.
A local anaesthetic will be administered before treatment begins, meaning that most patients feel no pain at all throughout the procedure. There may be a sensation of pressure or movement, but with very little to no discomfort for a painless root canal. Modern endodontics also now utilises cutting-edge technology that makes treatment faster, smoother, and more comfortable than ever before.
How long may I feel any pain or tenderness after root canal treatment?
It is completely normal to experience minor bruising, swelling, or discomfort during root canal recovery. This typically only lasts for 2-3 days after the procedure, fading away within the first week. In the very unlikely event that you experience more severe pain, or it lasts longer than expected, simply contact EndoCare for tailored advice to help get you back to your normal self.
What is the best pain relief after root canal treatment?
Your Specialist Endodontist at EndoCare will provide detailed advice to help you feel as comfortable as possible after treatment. It is usually recommended to take standard over-the-counter pain relief in the days that follow the procedure to minimise swelling or pain. Following surgery, we may recommend an icepack or equivalent to help to alleviate symptoms. Once again, your EndoCare team will provide all the information and support you need, so feel free to contact them with any questions, at any time.
