What to Expect During Root Canal Treatment

Leading Harley Street Endodontist, Dr Satinder Matharu walks you though the root canal treatment process.

Initial Examination And Consultation

Most patients come to EndoCare after being referred by their general dentist, but you can also book directly with us. The process is the same.

At your first visit, we carry out a full examination and take digital X-rays using the latest low-dose imaging equipment. This first appointment is as much about understanding your symptoms and concerns as it is about diagnosis.

In some cases, we may use a cone beam CT (CBCT) scan to provide a three-dimensional view of the tooth’s root system. These images help us assess the exact shape, length, and number of root canals, which is vital for planning precise treatment and ensuring the best possible outcome. All scans are carried out in-house for speed and accuracy.

Your specialist will then explain the findings, discuss treatment options, and outline what to expect. Many patients are reassured to learn that modern root canal treatment is pain-free, performed under local anaesthetic using advanced, gentle techniques that make the experience as relaxed as possible. Some people find themselves so relaxed they fall asleep during the procedure.

Local Anaesthetic For Root Canal Treatment And Patient Comfort

Before treatment begins, the tooth and surrounding area are completely numbed using a local anaesthetic. Modern anaesthetic solutions work quickly and effectively, even when the nerve is inflamed, ensuring you remain comfortable throughout. We use the latest delivery systems to make injections virtually painless.

For nervous patients, we offer sedation options to help ease anxiety and create a calm, stress-free experience.

Throughout the procedure, your clinician will check in regularly to ensure you remain completely at ease.

Preparing The Tooth

Once the area is numb, a small rubber or vinyl sheet (called a dental dam) is placed over the tooth. This keeps the area clean and sterile by preventing saliva from entering the treatment site, which is essential to prevent reinfection.

It also improves comfort by keeping water away from the back of the mouth and allows your clinician to work with precision and efficiency.

The Root Canal Procedure

Once the tooth is fully prepared and isolated, treatment can begin. A small opening is made in the top of the tooth to access the pulp - the soft tissue inside the root canal.

Using fine, flexible instruments and disinfectant solutions, the specialist removes the infected tissue and thoroughly cleans and shapes the canal system. The procedure is carried out using high-powered magnification and illumination, allowing the clinician to clean every tiny canal with exceptional accuracy.

Depending on the condition of the tooth, this process may take one or two visits. Once the canals are clean and dry, they are sealed with a safe, rubber-like material to prevent reinfection.  After this, the focus shifts to restoring the tooth’s structure and strength.

Your general dentist will then complete the final restoration, usually with a filling, crown, or bridge, to restore strength, protection, and a natural appearance.

After Treatment

Although treatment is painless, some mild tenderness or sensitivity is normal for a few days, particularly if the tooth was previously sore. Your clinician will explain how to manage this with over-the-counter pain relief, such as ibuprofen or paracetamol. Any discomfort usually fades within a few days, and most patients return to eating and speaking normally almost immediately.

At EndoCare, patient care continues well beyond the procedure. We monitor every case via email and follow-up x-rays, to make sure your tooth heals properly and that you remain pain-free and comfortable long after treatment.

With proper care and a suitable restoration, a tooth treated with root canal therapy can last for many years, often for life.
