Helping to prevent dental anxiety

The dental practice is a troubling place for many patients, with the ideas of appointments and treatment stirring up anxiety instantly.

Around 15% of patients have dentophobia, an extreme fear of the dentist, according to a 2025 study. It also notes that another 40% may have moderate or severe dental anxiety.

This is a problem, as many patients will avoid dental visits due to their fear, meaning they miss out on essential care. Key appointments such as root canal treatments and other forms of endodontic care can make people especially concerned, but making sure these appointments aren’t missed means issues can be treated before they develop further.

It may be helpful to understand why patients are fearful of dental appointments, and understand that they can begin conversations with their care provider in order to have an improved experience.

How can a dental practice stop anxiety?

Fear may kick in when specific stimuli are encountered in the dental practice.

The noise of high-speed handpieces are reported to increase patients’ heart rates, even when they have already been treated with such tools in the past. These are necessary in many approaches to care, and cannot be replaced. New technology aims to reduce the amount of noise created, and some practices encourage noise-cancelling headphones to help patients in the dental chair. This can make communication more difficult, however, so care is taken to gain a perfect balance.

Studies have also shown that our sense of smell can affect anxiety. Patients who are exposed to pleasant smells may find a reduction in dental anxiety and pain intensity, according to one study from 2023.

Many modern practices are also changing how they look, becoming a space that is more comfortable for all involved. This might mean a change of wall colour, more comfortable seating, and plenty of natural light, creating a more pleasant atmosphere that can put someone at ease.

Why are patients anxious when visiting the dentist?

There are many causes of dental anxiety. Firstly, people may have had negative previous experiences, which changes their future behaviour. Over time, trust can be developed between clinician and patient in an effort to break down this barrier. It can be difficult, but a sustained effort from both sides of the relationship can create significant benefits.

Visits to the dentist are also mentioned widely in pop culture, and are often associated with anxiety. Patients may develop a level of fear because of this, but their own experiences could reshape attitudes.

There is also a chance that people are born with dental anxiety being a part of their genetic makeup. A 2016 study found the fear could be inherited through genetic makeup, but this doesn’t necessarily mean that the fear can’t be overcome or worked through.
