A bad day for Paracetamol

Dr Sultan’s thoughts –
“I was very concerned to read this article about the long term use of Paracetamol.
Generally seen as a remarkably safe pain killer used long-term it may cause problems in heart, intestines and kidneys. The reason we may give Paracetamol over a non-steroidal anti-inflammatories like Neurofen is to avoid gastro-intestinal problems and yet studies have shown an increase in gastro-intestinal bleeding. Long term use of Paracetamol can very worryingly lead to both high blood pressure and strokes.
Although it is seen as an effective drug its use in chronic back pain has been called into question with very little evidence of any positive help.
The real problem of Paracetamol is overdose leading to irreversible liver damage and death. And so caution has to be applied with very high dosages but the studies are showing long-term use of low dosages may also cause problems and this will be a worry to all those people who for whatever medical reason have been told to avoid NSAIDs and Aspirin.”
